Photo: www.digitalimage.atThe Viennese firm ”podpod design” chose Targetti to illuminate the Theatre of Salzburg, which reopened its doors after restoration works by the Scheicher architectural firm. The new lighting effectively draws attention to the theatre’s importance in the city, even at night. The mix of white background light and coloured light gives a new nocturnal identity to the building and communicates the evening’s program to passers-by.
The colour of the light, in fact, changes depending on the type of event: purple for the opera, blue for dramatic plays, green for the ballet and orange for children’s plays.
Since the building is situated in the old part of Salzburg, in a pedestrian zone with a variety of other services and functions, “podpod design” opted for a “narrow” illumination of only the surface of the theatre. This eco-friendly approach effectively and beautifully optimises the brightness, maintaining low emission levels that make the façade almost seem like it is shaped by the light.
All the downward surfaces are illuminated by coloured lights produced by Targetti ICARE projectors installed flush with the road level and integrated in niches. The use of next generation RGB LED projectors allowed eliminating the multi-coloured shadows caused by conventional RGB LRB projectors with single chip. PY-QUAD wall washer light fixtures positioned on cornices bathe all the vertical surfaces with a warm white light facing both downwards and upwards. The entrance is treated almost like a separate part of the general project. For this purpose, the level of light under the vault was increased to direct visitors towards the entrance. The effect is emphasised by the coloured light between the columns that flank the entrance.
