The Riace Bronzes, the extraordinary works of art and world cultural heritage have come back home and Targetti has been given the privilege and responsibility of lighting them. Last December the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria (the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria), renowned all over the world as the home of the famous bronze sculptures for the last thirty years, once again opened its doors to the public after four years of restoration work. The project to reopen the Museum is a prime example of how the different institutions and companies involved were able to work together successfully to create an unrivalled structure both in terms of technological innovation and environmental sustainability.
The project, designed by the firm ABDR Architetti Associati in Rome, was aimed not only at doing restoration work and carrying out a seismic retrofit on the buildings, but also at designing a new internal layout and installing a modern air-conditioning and purification system to protect the exhibits on display. It is here that the technology of Targetti light fixtures came into play. The same technology that was used for the Titian Exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale that was suitably modified for the occasion in order to ensure that the full splendour of the bronze sculptures can be enjoyed and appreciated in complete safety and to safeguard their preservation.
Using the most sophisticated LED technology developed by Targetti available on the market which is able to change the tones of white light in its entire spectral composition directly on the exhibit, creating a light that can give these spectacular works of art an incredible realism and plasticity. It was for this reason that the light spectrum customization was carried out on-site and then remotely via Internet by Targetti technicians together with Art Historians who viewed the different modulations of light directly on the bronzes before the final decision was made. Targetti Lights on the Riace Bronzes is further proof of Targetti’s commitment and work in the art field which is aimed at making viewing these works of art a unique and unrepeatable cultural experience.
