One of the most important events on the European artistic scene was inaugurated on March 14. It was the most important in a series of exhibitions and initiatives dedicated to the painter Domenico Theotocopulos called El Greco, organised by the Fundación El Greco 2014 in Toledo, to mark the four-hundredth anniversary of his death. “The most important, significant and most complete exhibition that has ever been dedicated to the seventeenth century master” was how it was described by Gregorio Marañón, President of the El Greco Foundation 2014, in Toledo that is host to his most famous works on loan from generous lenders from over eleven different countries around the world. El Greco is one of the greatest masters of all time, the one that influenced twentieth century painting the most Marañón affirmed.
Targetti, with their vast experience of lighting works of art was chosen to light the entire exhibition at the Museum of Santa Cruz and in 5 different locations around the city of Toledo; around 125 works from 29 cities all over the world lit up using the latest LED technology developed by the research and development department in Florence.
The most sophisticated LED technology on the market that can tune the entire spectrum of white light shades directly on the work of art giving it an incredible realism and luminosity.
Light spectrum customization of every single fixture was carried out on-site by Targetti technicians with the valuable collaboration of Rafael Alonso, the most renowned El Greco restorer in the world who has worked on more than 90 of the Master’s works. He is the utmost authority on the original bright colours of every single painting on show which made it possible to enhance every single masterpiece with modulated light thus revealing the inner essence. Particular merit of being able to exploit the potential of technology in the service of art goes to the President of the Foundation Gregorio Marañón along with other staff and board members especially the Director General of the Fundación Jesús Carrobles, the President of the Fundación Board and general project coordinator Paloma Acuña, the exhibition curator Fernando Marías, as well as to Josè Luis Ruiz for the lighting design. Special thanks of course go to the Prado El Greco 2014 restorer Rafael Alonso who with his precious contribution made it possible to rediscover these paintings by the great Master in a highly skilled and dedicated light making them accessible and enjoyable as has never been possible before.
