Architectural Design: Alberto BartaliniOrganised by the Opera Primiziale Pisana, the exhibition by Igor Mitoraj is part of a programme to celebrate the 950th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Pisa Cathedral and for the first time brings a contemporary artist to the site of the famous Leaning Tower. The exhibition is being held in three different locations, the lawn, the Museum of Sinopie and a newly inaugurated space for temporary exhibitions. There are more than 100 works of art on display: monumental sculptures, bronzes, cast iron works, drawings and paintings which the artist has dedicated the past few years to creating.
The exhibition focuses on an unending dialogue between the works, the locations and history: the paintings are reminiscent of sculptures given their monumental proportions; the gold backgrounds recall the Tuscan landscape while the works on paper form a dialogue between the Sinopie and the Monumental cemetery in Pisa. The works are carefully arranged in the new exhibition space and relate effortlessly and effectively with the splendid monuments outside.
Targetti has been involved in designing the space from the beginning. Following instructions from the architect Alberto Bartalini, the exhibition curator, a customised lighting system was created using a thin, sleek profile integrated into the false-ceiling and running along the entire perimeter of the rooms. Projectors can be hung at any point on this to guarantee minimal visual impact and maximum flexibility, depending on the lighting needs indicated directly by the artist. Mitoraj in fact requested extremely lateral lighting from one side to create sharp and long reaching shadows on the works. All the strictly high colour rendering LED projectors which were created ad hoc for the exhibition were equipped with different accessories in order to create the desired effect depending on the needs of every single work of art. The result is an exhibition of great dramatic force and effect where the main theme of “angels”, chosen by the artist takes on a particularly symbolic significance: that of finding a minimum of peace and serenity in a historical moment such as the one we are living in that is characterised by political, religious and cultural conflicts.
