Inaugurated to commemorate the F.Light Light Festival in Florence between December 2016 and January 2017, restoring and lighting the Loggia del Pesce gave back one of the most authentic symbols of the city to the citizens of Florence.
Commissioned by the City Council upon completion of the restoration work of the monument, the lighting system was designed by SILFI spa, using custom made Targetti LED light fixtures.
The loggia, designed by Giorgio Vasari was commissioned by Cosimo I dei Medici in 1567 to house the fish market that had been previously held near Ponte Vecchio. Dismantled in the 1800s at the time of the so-called urban renovation of Florence and finally rebuilt in 1955 re-using most of the original materials, the loggia, consisting of a double row of nine arches and columns covered by a succession of convex vaults, is now a monument in its own right and stands in Piazza dei Ciompi. It stands out for its airy spaciousness and formal simplicity given the use of chains that balance the lateral thrusts of the arches without the use of external buttresses.
It is exactly here on the internal chains that the new custom made Targetti light fixtures are positioned. Their characteristic finish, lighting features and extreme compactness were studied by Targetti with the aim of developing a fixture that was as least invasive as possible and that could produce soft, elegant and scenic lighting as well as highlight the architecture of the monument in an appealing way ,as requested by the Superintendency of Architectural and Landscape Heritage in Florence. Fitted with VWFL optics for the central fixtures and asymmetrical optics for the lateral ones, they produce a diffused and soft light for the vaults that is in turn reflected to ensure the space can be used by citizens. The entire system consumes 400W which allows for considerable energy savings while still improving the lighting levels compared to the previous system.
