MOSTRA “CARAVAGGIO. UNA VITA DAL VERO”, SANT’IVO ALLA SAPIENZA, ROMAAs part of the initiatives for the fourth centenary of the death of Michelangelo Merisi known as Caravaggio, the State Archives of Rome organised, from 11 February to 15 May 2011, a ground-breaking exhibition pieced together like a detective story on original documents restored and kept in these archives. This on-field investigation mainly reveals the human story behind the artist.
TARGETTI’s contribution revealed itself to be essential, especially in identifying and implementing the best solution to meet the exhibiting and budget requirements associated with the special nature of the event held in a venue of extreme historical and cultural importance such as the Alessandrina Library of Borromini. The approach adopted by the designers, Carolina De Camillis and Riccardo Fibbi, was to abandon the interpretation of the origin of light in the individual paintings – a theme often repeated in exhibitions of Baroque paintings – and to focus instead on the correct reading of the pictorial surfaces, avoiding any possible specular reflection. Moreover, in keeping with the poetics of Caravaggio, the contrasts were emphasised keeping the overall lighting in the hall to a minimum.
For this purpose, the works were mainly lit from below and a “touch” of light from above was only given to a few paintings. To directly light the paintings from above, the project involved the use of one-meter segments of electrified tracks, cantilevered on the balustrade that runs along three walls of the hall entirely covered with wooden shelves. Adjustable projectors for pre-focused halogen lamps were installed. While fixtures for low-voltage dichroic halogen lamps were used to directly light the paintings from the bottom. These fixtures are equipped with optic devices to control the glare which are built into the base of the support structure of the actual paintings.
